CHAPTER SIX

‘YOU’VE been avoiding me.’

‘No, I haven’t.’

‘Tori!’

Her laughter was a delighted gurgle. ‘You sound just like Sas when she’s growling at me!’ Tori had heard the tyres of Matt’s car crunching over the gravel driveway and was standing at the top of the verandah steps to welcome her visitor. She sobered as Matt climbed the steps. ‘Yeah,’ she admitted. ‘I guess I have been avoiding you. Sorry.’

Matt stopped but he was already up the steps, close enough for Tori to feel that warmth—that astonishing glow from skin despite the fact that it was perfectly well covered by more than one layer of clothing at the moment. Matt wasn’t smiling.

‘Why, Tori?’

‘I…um…’ A list of glib excuses sprang to mind but had to be instantly dismissed. The light wasn’t great out here on the verandah, probably due to the layer of dead moths in the bowl of the outside light fitting, but Matt’s brow was creased and there was no escaping the mixture of bewilderment and pain in his eyes. He deserved nothing less than the truth.

‘I haven’t been able to forget that night in Fiji, Matt,’ she told him quietly. ‘It…it hasn’t gone away.’

‘It?’

Tori’s heart gave a painful thump that left her feeling vaguely dizzy. The words might be screaming in her head but they were so hard to form with her tongue.

‘Wanting you,’ she whispered.

‘Oh…God!’ With a groan, Matt pulled Tori into his arms and held her tightly. His face was pressed against her hair and his next words were rather muffled. ‘I feel the same way but I thought you’d decided you were better off not having me in your life. It’s been hell.’

Tori tightened the hold she had around Matt’s body. She could feel the outline of rigid muscles beneath the coarse wool of his jersey.

‘I didn’t want you to feel you were being pushed into something you didn’t want. The complications, you know? And I didn’t trust myself to be around you without making it too obvious what I wanted.’

‘I want it just as much as you do.’ Matt pulled back far enough for her to see his face.

Any thoughts Tori had had of showing Matt around her house and property, telling him of the advantages of having the beach just down the road or a border of native bush reserve, were long gone. Where they were was insignificant. They could still be on a Fijian island. They could be on the moon for all it mattered. Nothing existed apart from the two of them.

Nothing at all.

‘What are we going to do?’

Matt’s eyes had her pinned. What she saw in their depths fanned the curious clutch of sensation in her belly and her skin started to tingle. Tori had never felt so…alive.

‘We’re damned if we do,’ Matt said softly, ‘but we’re damned if we don’t.’

‘Maybe we could make it work,’ Tori whispered back.

‘You mean, no strings for you?’

‘Or you. Just friends…having fun.’

‘And to hell with any fallout?’

Tori’s face tilted as she leaned imperceptibly closer to Matt. ‘Fun’s important, Matt.
